About

Who…

I’m a regular person who’s had an irregular relationship with food for all of her life.  We’ve had our big ups, food and I, and we’ve had deep dips.  This year (2010) I’ve decided to take a stab at either a) improving this relationship, and/or b) at least reach a nitty gritty understanding of it.  I’ve figured out a few angles for doing that:

  • The no-brainer angle – combo the love of writing and the adoration of food by writing about it:  the meals I cook, the ingredients I grow at home, the cuisines I’m curious about, the food that figures largely in my travels, philosophize how food can mirror but also shape our lives.
  • The intellectual angle – explore some of the food-related topics floating out there, like localizing, sustainability, seasonal-izing, economy gastronomy, etc.  It’s one thing to read about them; it’s another to practice them.
  • The personal angle – document the ongoing big ups and the deep dips…honestly.  Humor will always have a seat at the table, too.

bio-pic2aOtherwise, I’m an expat who moved abroad with her significant other and their dog in 2008.  We lived in a tiny village in the Languedoc region of France for nearly a year, but in 2009 we moved again, but this time to Spain, opting to settle down in a small town along the Mediterranean.  By profession, I’m a life coach.  By nature, I’m a practical dreamer.  My tastebuds lean towards the savoury over the sweet.

Why I Blog…

I believe we have to create our own vehicles for answering the big questions that both guide and complicate our lives, and to give our creative impulses the wings necessary to show us what we’re made of.  This blog, for me, is a twofer.  With it I get a chariot and feathers.

Why the content is a weird mix…

I started blogging in 2007, and in those early days was a little too enthusiastic about the medium.  In short, I created too many blogs by several.  It tripped me up, and ultimately, I hit a wall. Then I peeled myself from that wall and pared down to just one.  This blog.  Which makes my sanity far happier.

However, I’m sentimental just enough about earlier efforts at blogs and newsletters and such that I’ve archived that material under one roof.

Why this blog about food doesn’t look like other food blogs…

a) See above comment about weird mix.

b) See the comment above that one: basically, this blog is a creative endeavor and a path to self-awareness.

c) So, by design it’s not visually hemmed to a genre.  At least not yet.  This year the focus is on food.  Next year the focus might be kilim carpets.  I need the elbow room.
